    Plot Outline:
In a small French colony, a drunken man kills someone. While a guillotine is being shipped in, he changes, becoming a good and popular man.

    Plot:
1849, on the cod islands of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, two drunk men commit a senseless murder. One is sentenced to death and must wait in the custody of the captain of the island's guard until a guillotine can arrive from Martinique. During the months of waiting, the convict Neel Auguste becomes the prot?g? of the captain's wife, Madame La. As she guides Neel to redemption through good works, sobriety, and study, the men of the small French elite who govern the islands criticize the captain for the latitude he gives his wife. He offends them further through his extraordinary love for her, his abrupt manner, and his growing defense of Neel. What will he do when the guillotine arrives?

A GREAT, GRIPPING GRITTY FILM, 21 May 2002
    9/10
    Author: rps-2 from Bracebridge Ont

You have to watch the odd foreign film such as this to understand just how far Hollywood has strayed from cinematic honesty. This is a simple, beautifully done, superbly acted piece of theatre set in one of the world's least known places, the fog shrouded French island of St. Pierre, off Newfoundland. It's a simple yet gripping film with an intriguing plot, almost a morality play. There is visceral human drama, much mystery and wonderful soul stirring pathos. And how nice to see a movie without the mandatory Hollywood happy ending. A well spent evening!

Movie Quotes: Charles Highway: If there's one thing that mothers don't want to see in you it's whatever it is that their daughters do.
Crazy Credits:: We know about 1 Crazy Credits. One of them reads:
At the end of the film, a story of the first flight to the Moon, the words THIS IS THE END are displayed first, then OF THE BEGINNING is added.
Goofs: We know about 1 goofs. Here comes one of them:
Anachronisms: When Neel is told he's strong enough to "ramer jusqu'au chez les Anglais", the English subtitles say "row over to Canada" rather than "row over to the English". This introduces an error: both the geography and the dialogue in other scenes make it clear that Newfoundland is meant, but Newfoundland wasn't part of Canada until 1949.
Trivia: There are 5 entries in the trivia list - like these:
    • 'Alain Corneau' was to direct the film in 1997, but abandoned the production after disagreements with the films producers.
    • The film was to be completely filmed on the island of Saint-Pierre, but when the snow failed to arrive, the production had to move further north to Newfoundland for certain sequences.
    • Director Patrice Leconte approached Emir Kusturica for the role of Neel Auguste after seeing a newspaper picture of the director looking exactly how he pictured Auguste.
